Round 17 saw the 2 biggest rivals of the Premier league face each other for the third time this season.
The Boy's "celibrating" after the Derby Win against Sydenham (Kadd Images)
Sydenham were victorious on the first occasion, and regardless of the way in which the Sunshine side lost, it’s the points that matter. On the second meeting, a 1 goal lead and total domination were still not enough to secure the points, as deep into stoppage time a “tow poke” saw the Sydenham side share the spoils.
So it was obvious that this game was the single most defining moment for both clubs.
The Media were in frenzy. All week comments were made about how good this Sydenham side was. Their manager was outspoken in claiming that his side were unbeatable, and that they can come to any stadium and come away with the points. Even the fortress of Castley Stadium would not be able withstand an assault from his superior team.
In a complete contrast, the Sunshine Manager had very little to say, stating “I prefer to let the boy’s answer by way of their on field performance”. And “My boy’s will give a good account of themselves when it counts”.
All knew what this meant, and ,it was evident that this was to be a fiercely contested encounter, as match officials were needed to keep the sides apart prior to the teams emergence from the tunnel.
The return from injury of Sunshine’s “Vietnamese” International Nathan Le was good news, as he is always a handful for opposing defenders. In fact, the manager had, for the first time this season, the full squad to choose from, giving him a welcome headache in selection.
With Bobby ‘The Gloves” in goal, Sunshine put out their strongest side.
The match commenced, with Sunshine kicking towards the Kop end.
Immediately the Sydenham defence were under pressure , and they resorted
to the old English style of game. This did not solve their problems
however, as Chhuama, whilst lacking in physical size, was not lacking in
his ability to win every ball that came his way. He soon released a ball
that would see Sunshine’s Resident striker have the first opportunity on
goal. Damon’s effort failed to trouble the Sydenham shot stopper. The
game continued to be dominated by Sunshine, and whilst Sydenham did
manage to get a foot to the ball at times, they were only able to thump
the ball up the park, in a hope that it would connect with one of their
Strikers. On one occasion they managed to link defence with attack, and
would have had a clear run at goal, If Peter “Hatz” wasn’t around to
dissipate
the attack. In
fact it was impossible to fault the Centre back, as he dominated the game for the entire half.
Such was Sunshine’s Dominance, that it was only a matter of time before the first goal would be registered. And it was no surprise that no less than 6 players were involved in a play that saw Our Maltese International Steven Farrugia calmly slot the ball into the back of the net , Shocking further, the shell shocked Sydenham team. Sunshine were in front for the third time this season. We were not going to be denied our revenge, as our boys continued to pepper the Sydenham Shot stopper, but to his
credit, it was only 1 goal to nil when the halftime whistle blew.
The halftime talk was simple. “keep going the way you are boy’s and we will go further ahead” Maikousis stated. And with that they were ready for the second session.
Due to some concern or another Bobby “The Gloves” was to be subbed and this saw our perfect Centre back “Hatz” fill in as goal keeper.
The second half commenced, and Sydenham started with renewed vigor. No doubt the Manager had told them that we need to win this game at all costs, because they didn’t allow our boy’s the space they enjoyed in the first half. Stelios “Fàbregas” Tzanoudakis” after intercepting a cross field ball, surged forward and with an exceptionally timed through ball, put Damon “Torres” on goal and “Torres
" wasted no time in creating the space needed to let it rip, but the lines man raised his flag for offside. On the Video replay, it was (whilst a close call) the right decision. From the subsequent kick, the Sydenham side were to have their first real chance at goal. Our defence were caught napping, and whilst they were able to intercept the ball going down the right, were only able to clear it as far as the next Sydenham player. And as is their way, The Sydenham player wasted no time in driving the ball into the penalty area. And there were 2 unmarked Sydenham players in the box. The resulting shot left Our Shot stopper no chance, 1-1 and all to play for.
The Sunshine outfit was not going to be denied, and visibly lifted. They refused to let it be, and Through another fantastic team effort, Damon “Torres” Kadlecik was to have his best chance at goal. With it all to do ,he surged forward, picked up the ball and bolting to goal left all in his wake, coming face to face with Sydenham’s shot stopper, He released the ball, resulting in it hitting back of the net leaving the Sydenham keeper stranded on the edge of the 18 yard box. Castley Stadium was alive for the second time . Sunshine 2 Sydenham 1. The game was to be played in 2 parts from then on. Sunshine passing the ball around continually pressing up the Park, and Sydenham continually smashing the ball from defence to attack. Sunshine were to put Damon through on goal 2 more times, the first whilst placed superbly was to be stopped by a great save. The second should have sealed the match. Another perfectly weighted through ball, saw Damon out wide on the left. The Sydenham Keeper alert to the Danger, came bolting out of the goal. “Torres” too fast for the keeper, intercepted the ball, and looking up attempted a lob, which only managed to hit the side netting.
The dominance of the Sunshine outfit continued, and When the final whistle went, Castley Stadium erupted , in a Victory, which saw Sunshine Earn a thoroughly well deserved 3 points.
After the game:
Maikousis;
“ The boy’s showed what they were made of today” And “We dominated the match from start to finish, Sydenham were only able to score through a defensive mistake”.
“ It is clear that these “Derby” matches mea
n a lot to the Heights supporters, and the boy’s wanted t
o win it for them.”
When asked about the claims from the Reds Manager Maikousis had this to say;
“ I've said it before
; When you make wild claims , you need to be able to back them up, Sydenham were not able to do this, and we were
far too strong.”
Well done Boy’s in a well deserved victory.
