SUNSHINE HEIGHTS 4 ALTONA CITY 0
Well it arrived - our last game - everything riding on the result.
We knew we had to win. Any other result would almost certainly hand the title to South Yarra, our very capable main adversaries. The “dressing room” was pervaded with a confident air of expectancy. Did I say dressing room? – Well the “area of grass” where the coach gave his last instructions to his troops – “Go out and enjoy yourselves” - and so they did.
We kicked off into a cool wind and immediately went into attack. Dan sent a great ball wide for Abdul who made good distance down the right flank making a perfect cross for Dan to score our first goal all in under two minutes. Abdul put a through ball for Dan who being under pressure passed back to Angus who from wide on the right sent in a high cross, unfortunately Dan’s header was not firm or on target. Abdul again found Dan whose pass was not definite enough. Soley began to worry their defence with his forceful tackling. He found Dan whose lobbed pass to Steven unfortunately was collected by the keeper. However, we remained in control, Dan finding Steven whose shot hit the post and came back into play. Dan spread the ball wide to Abdul on the wing the resultant cross being cleared by their overworked keeper. Altona did cause concern during one rare break away but it was foiled by Brendon who charging in cleared the danger into touch. Our running wing man Abdul, forced a corner which was well taken by Soley. The result was one blocked header from Dan and one free kick against due to “ball hitting hand.” We continued to attack through Angus who found Abdul whose cross was hit first time on the turn by Dan, good football so results must surely come. They nearly did just before half time. Abdul forced yet another corner, well taken by Soley for Dan to head, strong but just wide, it was a good effort and deserved better. Our last effort just on half time was a long down the wing pass from Geordi for Abdul to make a good high cross where its bounce beat the goalie unfortunately also the goal itself,
the ball landing on the roof of the net.
Half time and only 1-0 to us, not good considering we had been so completely dominant
since kick off.
We started the second half now with the additional help of the wind. We attacked with menace. Stephen put a powerful shot which rebounded off the right hand upright. He followed up trying to dribble the keeper. Dan took a free kick from 45 meters. Steven locking onto it passed to Soley who’s powerful shot unfortunately went over the bar. This same bar was obstructive to Dan’s shot which quickly followed but justice was served by Steven’s alert follow-up when our striker headed our second goal when Stephen met the ball as it rebounded off the cross bar.
A minute later the striker again used his head from another free kick. This time the ball went behind. All this pressure was earning free kick after free kick as Altona strived to stay alive. The next free kick was earned about 30 meters out and the coach urged Dan to “have a go” and that is what he did. It was a good shot, the keeper having to move quickly left to save it.
Soley continued harassing the Altona defence and lobbed a high ball to Steven who whilst trying to control it was overrun and the chance passed. Dan took a corner low at the near post, the full-back parried the ball which flew back out to Dan who re-crossed the ball for Steven to head his second goal and our third.
Our last game was almost over and as time was running out Dan hit one shot over the bar from 12 yards but the second shot was very firmly struck with his left foot from outside the box and the ball struck a defenders boot and ricochet high into the goal for our 4th and last goal. In the dying minute of the game Altona broke away, their striker hitting the ball hard, aiming at our right hand corner of the net but Tony was having none of it and flung himself sideways thereby keeping a clean sheet. Tony only touched the ball a couple of times all game so to be so alert after so much inaction was a credit to him. Well done Tony!
So we made it….but only on goal difference therefore we must recognize the quality of our main adversary South Yarra, the only team to beat us.
Tyrone wishes to congratulate each of his “Sunshine Boys” who he claims “acquitted themselves like men.” He said these boys have represented themselves, their parents and the Sunshine Heights Football Club to the highest level of sportsmanship and dedication to duty on the field and he is extremely proud of them and looks forward to sharing their continuing journey forward next season.
