Round 18 Match Report
Sunshine Heights have closed the 2009 season with a fashionable win against Whittlesea Stallions at Castley Reserve last Sunday.
Having already consolidated third spot, Heights were determined to conclude their last game with success and finish on a high. Unfortunately, the game didn’t get to a good start after the home team conceded a penalty to the visitors early in the match. The referee decided that there was contact between goalkeeper Christopher Maynard and a Whittlesea striker and had no doubt in awarding the visitors with a spot kick. The Stallions had no trouble converting the penalty and were delighted to take an early lead. Once again, Heights were forced to play catch up and search for that elusive equaliser. However, fortune was in Heights favour after Whittlesea conceded an own goal from a Joshua Murphy cross which would have been converted by Huseyin Allahverdi anyhow. There were no other chances or near misses for the remainder of the first half and both teams looked pretty even. Going into the break the score was tied at 1-1.
The second half saw Sunshine step up a gear and were quick to dominate possession. Bradley Murray was in full control and working hard to create chances for his strikers. A lovely through ball sent Arley Nini chasing along the right flank to neatly slot the ball into the back of the net and record Heights second goal. With a one goal advantage, Heights were determined to continue to apply more pressure and search for a third goal. And their efforts paid off late in the second half after Joshua Murphy was brought down in the box under similar fashion as the first half infringement. The referee had no doubt in awarding Sunshine a penalty and it was Sam Beesley who stepped up to take the spot kick and score the final goal for Heights for the 2009 season. Overall, it was an entertaining game at Castley Reserve that saw Sunshine finish the term on a high. From here on, Heights can look forward to a well earned break and focus on the upcoming playoff in November.
